Best Gas Companies To Watch For 2014

This month The Oil Drum (TOD) is closing its doors and is going to archive status after eight years of operation. From its inception in 2005, TOD became the primary “go to” site for people looking for information on energy issues, and for answers every time oil prices spiked. Because oil prices spiked a lot beginning in 2005 (with Hurricane Katrina), TOD’s readership grew rapidly.

The site was sufficiently influential that its closing has been written about in the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Financial Times, and in industry publications such as Platts. As a Financial Times article noted, over the years the mainstream media frequently quoted TOD contributors, and the reason was the high quality of the energy discussions on the site.

I had a history with TOD that I detailed in my farewell post there, The Way I Saw Things. I became involved with TOD shortly after its inception and remained involved to a limited degree up until the end. I want to share my abridged story because my interactions with TOD readers had a huge influence on the way I view the energy industry and human behavior. This in turn has influenced my investment philosophy.

In 2005, the year TOD was formed, I was working as a chemical engineer at the ConocoPhillips refinery in Billings, Montana. I worked in the group that was responsible for optimizing refinery economics. We determined which crude grades should be purchased, and then tweaked the refinery based on that crude slate as well as whether margins were higher for diesel or for gasoline.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Cash Flow Investor]

Using this alternative payout ratio has saved me from a few situations in which the traditional payout ratio indicated that the dividend was covered - only for the company to later declare a dividend freeze or cut when the free cash flow ran out. One specific example is Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.B), the global oil behemoth.

  • [By Sara Sjolin]

Oil firms were rising, tracking oil prices higher. Shares of BG Group PLC (UK:BG) picked up 0.8%, BP PLC (UK:BP) (BP) added 0.6% and Royal Dutch Shell PLC (UK:RDSB) (RDS.B) inched 0.1% higher.

  • [By Sara Sjolin]

On Monday, energy firms also showed positive moves, with shares of BG Group PLC (UK:BG) 1.2% higher and Royal Dutch Shell PLC (UK:RDSB) (RDS.B) rising 0.8%. Oil prices, however, moved slightly lower, but held above the $101-a-barrel level.

While Bakken formation oil and gas stocks have grabbed the attention ofAmerican investors, small cap Alberta or Saskatchewan oil and gas stocks Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd (NYSE: AAV), Sonde Resources Corp (NYSEMKT: SOQ) and up and coming Centor Energy Inc (OTCBB: CNTO) have been largely overlooked as they seek to exploit oil and gas (including oil sands) in the resource rich Canadian provinces of Alberta or Saskatchewan or seek strategic alternatives for their assets in these areas or themselves. It should be mentioned that Canada oil reserves are third only to Venezuela and Saudi Arabia with over 95% of these reserves being the oil sands of Alberta plus that province contains much of the country conventional oil reserves as well. In addition, the province of Saskatchewan along with offshore areas of Newfoundland contain substantial production and reserves. When judging a company's prospects, how quickly it turns cash outflows into cash inflows can be just as important as how much profit it's booking in the accounting fantasy world we call "earnings." This is one of the first metrics I check when I'm hunting for the market's best stocks. Today, we'll see how it applies to New Jersey Resources (NYSE: NJR  ) .

Hot Income Companies To Buy For 2014

Even though you're reading this now, odds are that three weeks ago you'd never even heard of Drinks Americas Holdings, Ltd. (OTCMKTS:DKAM). And, like so many other young, nano-cap stocks, it would be easy to assume the current strength being exhibited by DKAM is nothing but a short-term phenomenon, meaning there's no particular reason to jump on the stock now. If there was ever a reason to jump onto a micro cap name for a quick trade though, this may be it.

As the name suggests, DKAM is a beverage stock. Specifically, Drinks Americas Holdings, Ltd. is the distributor of well-known alcoholic beverages like KAH Tequila, Old Whiskey River Bourbon, Rheingold Beer, Chili Devil Beer, and Red Pig Ale, just to name a few. Sales have been decent too, relative to the market cap of $265,000 - the company has generated $6.3 million worth of revenue over the prior four quarters. It's not turned any of that revenue into profit, mind you; the organization lost $11.7 million over the course of the same timeframe. Then again, it's not as if the market is actually looking for net income here. It's a young company, and still in a high-growth phase. Traders are willing to give the company time to get the proverbial ball rolling, and it seems to be using that time wisely.

Advisors' Opinion:

You can see the same trends among many individual European stocks. Telecom giant Telefonica (NYSE: TEF  ) has big exposure to Latin America, but investors focus on its home country of Spain in limiting its gains. The same trend has affected French oil giant Total (NYSE: TOT  ) , which shares the same exposure to energy projects around the world yet has been tarnished by its proximity to the crisis-ridden continent. By focusing on value rather than perception, you can get some great values when others are being irrational.

Top Promising Stocks To Buy Right Now

This month's see-saw in the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) has turned triple-digit movements into an everyday occasion. We're on pace for another such day today, with a report from China saying the government will push to stabilize lending rates easing Wall Street's fears of a credit crunch in the world's second-largest economy. The Dow's up 149 points as of 2:20 p.m. EDT, and nearly every stock on the blue-chip index is in the green. Forget all of last week's fuss over quantitative easing; Wall Street has moved on. Let's look into the stories you need to know about today.

Alcoa can't capitalize
Good news out of China usually means good things for Alcoa (NYSE: AA  ) , but that isn't the case today. The aluminum producer's shares have fallen 2.2% -- the worst performance on the Dow today -- as a glut of oversupply and lukewarm demand continues to slam the materials sector. Even worse, one of Alcoa's only promising markets, the U.S., added to its woes today: American GDP growth for the first quarter was revised down to 1.8% from a previous estimate of 2.4%. The disappointing GDP number owes primarily to reduced consumer spending, but it's still an unneeded hindrance for Alcoa, considering the firm's reliance on healthy economies for its own growth.

Best Casino Companies To Watch For 2015: RPC Inc (RES)

RPC, Inc. (RPC), incorporated on January 20, 1984, is a holding company. The Company provides a broad range of specialized oilfield services and equipment primarily to independent and oil and gas companies engaged in the exploration, production and development of oil and gas properties throughout the United States, including the southwest, mid-continent, Gulf of Mexico, Rocky Mountain and Appalachian regions, and in selected international markets. The Company operates in two business segments: Technical Services and Support Services.

The services and equipment provided include, among others, pressure pumping services, downhole tool services coiled tubing services, snubbing services (also referred to as hydraulic workover services), nitrogen services, the rental of drill pipe and other specialized oilfield equipment, and well control. RPC acts as a holding company for its operating units, Cudd Energy Services, Patterson Rental and Fishing Tools, Bronco Oilfield Services, Thru Tubing Solutions, Well Control School, and others.

Technical Services

Technical Services include RPC oil and gas service lines that utilize people and equipment to perform value-added completion, production and maintenance services directly to a customer well. The demand for these services is generally influenced by customersdecisions to invest capital toward initiating production in a new oil or natural gas well, improving production flows in an existing formation, or to address well control issues. This business segment consists primarily of pressure pumping, downhole tools, coiled tubing, snubbing, nitrogen, well control, wireline and fishing. The principal markets for this business segment include the United States, including the southwest, mid-continent, Gulf of Mexico, Rocky Mountain and Appalachian regions, and in selected international markets. Customers include multi-national and independent oil and gas producers, and selected nationally owned oil companies.

The Company primarily provides these services to customers in order to enhance the initial production of hydrocarbons in formations that have low permeability. Pressure pumping services involve using complex, truck or skid-mounted equipment designed and constructed for each specific pumping service offered. The mobility of this equipment permits pressure pumping services to be performed in varying geographic areas. Principal materials utilized in the pressure pumping business include fracturing proppants, acid and bulk chemical additives. Generally, these items are available from several suppliers, and the Company utilizes more than one supplier for each item.

Fracturing services are performed to stimulate production of oil and natural gas by increasing the permeability of a formation. Fracturing is particularly important in shale formations, which have low permeability, and unconventional completion, because the formation containing hydrocarbons is not concentrated in one area and requires multiple fracturing operations. The fracturing process consists of pumping fluid gel and sometimes nitrogen into a cased well at sufficient pressure to fracture the formation at desired locations and depths. Sand, bauxite or synthetic proppant, which is often suspended in gel, is pumped into the fracture. When the pressure is released at the surface, the fluid gel returns to the well surface, but the proppant remains in the fracture, thus keeping it open so that oil and natural gas can flow through the fracture into the production tubing and ultimately the well surface.

Acidizing services are also performed to stimulate production of oil and natural gas, but they are used in wells that have undergone formation damage due to the buildup of various materials that block the formation. Acidizing entails pumping volumes of specially formulated acids into reservoirs to dissolve barriers and enlarge crevices in the formation, thereby eliminating obstacles to the flow of oil and natural gas.! Acidizin! g services can also enhance production in limestone formations.Throug. TTS provides services and downhole motors, fishing tools and other specialized downhole tools and processes to operators and service companies in drilling and production operations, including casing perforation at the completion stage of an oil or gas well. The services that TTS provides are especially suited for unconventional drilling and completion activities.

Coiled tubing services, involve the injection of coiled tubing into wells to perform various applications and functions for use principally in well-servicing operations and more recently to facilitate completion of horizontal wells. Coiled tubing is a flexible steel pipe with a diameter of less than four inches manufactured in continuous lengths of thousands of feet and wound or coiled around a reel. It can be inserted through existing production tubing and used to perform workovers without using a larger, more costly workover rig. Principal advantages of employing coiled tubing in a workover operation include: not having to shut-in the well during such operations, the ability to reel continuous coiled tubing in and out of a well significantly faster than conventional pipe, the ability to direct fluids into a wellbore with more precision, and enhanced access to remote or offshore fields due to the smaller size and mobility of a coiled tubing unit compared to a workover rig.

Snubbing involves using a hydraulic workover rig that permits an operator to repair damaged casing, production tubing and downhole production equipment in a high-pressure environment. A snubbing unit makes it possible to remove and replace downhole equipment while maintaining pressure on the well. Customers benefit because these operations can be performed without removing the pressure from the well, which stops production and can damage the formation, and because a snubbing rig can perform many applications at a lower cost than other alternatives. There are a number of uses fo! r nitroge! n, an inert, non-combustible element, in providing services to oilfield customers and industrial users outside of the oilfield. For its oilfield customers, nitrogen can be used to clean drilling and production pipe and displace fluids in various drilling applications.

For its oilfield customers, nitrogen can be used to clean drilling and production pipe and displace fluids in various drilling applications. Increasingly, it is used as a displacement medium to production in older wells in which production has depleted. It also can be used to create a fire-retardant environment in hazardous blowout situations and as a fracturing medium for its fracturing service line. In addition, nitrogen can be complementary to its snubbing and coiled tubing service lines, because it is a non-corrosive medium and is frequently injected into a well using coiled tubing. For non-oilfield industrial users, nitrogen can be used to purge pipelines and create a non-combustible environment.

Cudd Energy Services specializes in responding to and controlling oil and gas well emergencies, including blowouts and well fires, domestically and internationally. In connection with these services, Cudd Energy Services, along with Patterson Services, has the capacity to supply the equipment, and personnel necessary to restore affected oil and gas wells to production. During the past several years, the Company has responded to well control situations in several international locations including Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Colombia, Egypt, Kuwait, Libya, Mexico, Qatar, Taiwan, Trinidad, Turkmenistan, Tanzania, Abu Dhabi and Venezuela.

Wireline is classified into two types of services: slick or braided line and electric line. In both, a spooled wire is unwound and lowered into a well, conveying various types of tools or equipment. Slick or braided line services use a non-conductive line primarily for jarring objects into or out of a well, as in fishing or plug-setting operations. Elect! ric line ! services lower an electrical conductor line into a well allowing the use of electrically-operated tools such as perforators, bridge plugs and logging tools. Wireline services can be an integral part of the plug and abandonment process, near the end of the life cycle of a well.

Fishing involves the use of specialized tools and procedures to retrieve lost equipment from a well drilling operation and producing wells. It is a service required by oil and gas operators who have lost equipment in a well. Oil and natural gas production from an affected well typically declines until the lost equipment can be retrieved. In some cases, the Company creates customized tools to perform a fishing operation. The customized tools are maintained by the Company after the particular fishing job for future use if a similar need arises.

Support Services

Support Services include RPC oil and gas service lines that primarily provide equipment for customer use or services to assist customer operations. The equipment and services include drill pipe and related tools, pipe handling, pipe inspection and storage services, and oilfield training services. The demand for these services tends to be influenced primarily by customer drilling-related activity levels. The principal markets for this segment include the United States, including the Gulf of Mexico, mid-continent, Rocky Mountain and Appalachian regions and project work in selected international locations in the last three years including primarily Canada, Latin America and the Middle East. Customers primarily include domestic operations of multi-national and independent oil and gas producers, and selected nationally owned oil companies.

Rental tools accounted for approximately 5% of 2012 revenues. The Company rents specialized equipment for use with onshore and offshore oil and gas well drilling, completion and workover activities. The drilling and subsequent operation of oil and gas wells generally require ! a variety! of equipment. The equipment needed is in part determined by the geological features of the production zone and the size of the well itself. As a result, operators and drilling contractors often find it more economical to supplement their tool and tubular inventories with rental items instead of owning a complete inventory. The Company facilities are strategically located to serve the staging points for oil and gas activities in the Gulf of Mexico, mid-continent region, Appalachian region and the Rocky Mountains.

Oilfield Pipe Inspection Services, Pipe Management and Pipe Storage includes pipe inspection services include Full Body Electromagnetic and Phased Array Ultrasonic inspection of pipe used in oil and gas wells. These services are provided at both the Company inspection facilities and at independent tubular mills in accordance with negotiated sales and/or service contracts. Its customers are oil companies and steel mills, for which it provides in-house inspection services, inventory management and process control of tubing, casing and drill pipe. Its locations in Channelview, Texas and Morgan City, Louisiana are equipped with capacity cranes, specially designed forklifts and a computerized inventory system to serve a variety of storage and handling services for both oilfield and non-oilfield customers.

Well Control School provides industry and government accredited training for the oil and gas industry both in the United States and in limited international locations. Well Control School provides training in various formats including conventional classroom training, interactive computer training including training delivered over the Internet, and mobile simulator training. Energy Personnel International provides drilling and production engineers, well site supervisors, project management specialists, and workover and completion specialists on a consulting basis to the oil and gas industry to meet customersneeds for staff engineering and well site management.

Advisors' Opinion:

    O-H-I-O
While there are many shale formations in the U.S. producing high amounts of condensate, one could benefit from moving condensate to Canada more than the others; the Utica formation. While the Utica hasn't turned out to be the oil play some were hoping it would be, the most lucrative wells in the region are being drilled in what is known as the "wet gas" region of the play. In this region, Utica-heavy operators Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK  ) and Gulfport Energy (NASDAQ: GPOR  ) have focused much of their attention in this region, because it is believed to generate the highest rate of return for drillers.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

EOG is of course not alone in its quest. The nation's No. 2 natural gas producer, Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK  ) , has shifted its focus to developing the oil-rich Eagle Ford. This past quarter the company produced an average of 85,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, which is up a breathtaking 135% over last year. While we shouldn't expect the rate of growth to continue, however, overall oil production will continue to grow as both companies expect to continue drilling at least for the next decade. That will go a long way in continuing to secure our nation's energy future.

  • [By Sean Williams]

The other factor upstream and downstream companies have to keep in mind is maintaining adequate liquidity to make acquisitions, deploy infrastructure improvements, and cover day-to-day expenses. Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK  ) , for instance, went on a buying spree last decade, which positioned it as one of the U.S. leaders in natural gas reserves. However, when natural gas prices fell to decade lows last year, Chesapeake didn't have enough cash to cover its 2013 capital expenditures. In response, Chesapeake was forced to raise cash by selling assets.

10 Best Cheap Stocks To Own For 2014

My colleague Dan Caplinger noted this morning that the markets are trading lower on little negative news, but the fresh memory of Ben Bernanke's testimony and the prospect of reduced Fed bond-buying are weighing on investors' minds. The fear that cheap money will soon be a thing of the past is likely what's causing the markets to drop today.

As of 12:45 p.m. EDT the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) has fallen 31 points, or 0.2%, to 15,263. The S&P 500 is down by 0.36%, and the NASDAQ has fallen 0.3%. Let's take a look at a few of the Dow's biggest losers today.

Shares of Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ  ) are down 2.3% this afternoon. Shares rose 17.1% yesterday after the company announced expectation-beating quarterly earnings, and today's decline likely owes to nothing more than profit-taking. Yesterday's jump was enough to make many market participants consider selling, but because the stock is up 70.9% year to date, the move to lock in profits is a no-brainer for investors who are in it for short-term gains. For long-term buy-and-hold investors, today's move lower should be of no concern. So long as the quarterly report met your expectations, continue to hold on, because this stock will likely be in for a bumpy ride the next few quarters.

Next Tuesday, Emerson Electric (NYSE: EMR  ) will release its latest quarterly results. The key to making smart investment decisions on stocks reporting earnings is to anticipate how they'll do before they announce results, leaving you fully prepared to respond quickly to whatever inevitable surprises arise. That way, you'll be less likely to make an uninformed knee-jerk reaction to news that turns out to be exactly the wrong move.

  • [By David Sterman]

We can glean a few clear trends from these share buybackers:

The majority of these plans are simply new plans to replace old plans that have now been completed, meaning these companies buy back their shares on a regular basis. Many of these stocks are valued right near the market multiple of 15 to 16 times projected earnings. Many of these stocks offer up a decent dividend as well, boosting their total cash return to shareholders. Most of these buyback programs represent a meaningful amount of the current share count. (Both VMWare's (NYSE: VMW) and Emerson Electric's (NYSE: EMR) buyback programs are not really meaningful as they are only likely large enough to offset stock option grants). Most of these stocks are near their 52-week highs, extending the theme of the current era that companies no longer wait for their stock to fall out of bed before buying back stock. Nor do any of these stocks trade below tangible book value, which also had historically served as a key litmus test of buyback efficacy.

Still, the longer-term buyback programs for some of these firms have surely been impressive. Take toy maker Hasbro (NYSE: HAS) as an example. The company's new $500 million share buyback (which would reduce the share count by 11% at current prices) is reasonably impressive -- until you look at what Hasbro has already been doing for nearly a decade.

Pent Up Demand Pushing Cyclical Stocks

We are coming out of a lengthy period of decreased spending in the wake of 2008-09, which has built pent up demand for automobiles, housing and capital expenditures. The average age of vehicles on the road has reached a record high of 11.4 years. Demand for new houses fell off dramatically since the Great Recession. The average U.S. home was built in 1974 and continues to age.
As people have chosen to fix rather than replace their vehicles and homes, we’ve seen the replacement-type industries do very well. Auto Retail’s second quarter sales and earnings per share were up 14.7% and 18.6%, respectively. Home improvement retail grew sales nearly 10% with earnings up 20% from second quarter 2012.
Adding to the pent up demand for housing is the number of young people living with their parents rather than buying or renting on their own. According to real-estate marketplace Trulia, the number of “missing households” (Americans who would currently be owning or renting a home if pre-recession economic trends had continued) was up to 2.4 million in March. More than half of these missing households are 18 to 34-year-olds.
This pent up demand extends beyond just the immediate products being bought by consumers. Businesses have held off replacing durable goods since the recession. All of this excess demand will have to be released at some point. Eventually, these homes and vehicles will exceed their useful life and need to be replaced. To meet the need for the excess demand, companies will not be able to hold off re-investing in new plant equipment.
We’ve seen the beginning of this demand in 2013 and believe there is more to come. The market is buying into this as well, as more growth and manufacturing oriented sectors – such as Consumer Discretionary and Industrials – have performed well over the near-term.
Share prices for stocks in the Industrial sectors are mo

The stock pushed to new highs last week, and has seemed to stabilize above the $90 mark, giving it a forward P/E of 11.61 times. Now, the company is in much better shape and deserves higher valuation multiples than, say, J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP  ) , which has negative earnings but trades at just 0.32 times sales. But when comparing Dillard's to other, healthy department chains, such as Kohl's (NYSE: KSS  ) , we see a more interesting picture. Kohl's trades at 10.7 times forward earnings, and while it saw lower same-store sales due to bad weather, the company still beat estimates and is set to grow via new stores.
